U3A news May 5th 2015

The Cotswolds trip was a great success, the sun shone, the rain stayed away and we visited some lovely places. Hidcote gardens proved popular with its lovely array of Spring flowers. The villages of Stowe on the Wold, Morton on the Marsh, Burford, Broadway and especially Bourton on the Water were very pretty with lots of places of interest. Stratford, with its connections to Shakespeare, was steeped in culture and history. We enjoyed the play in the RSC theatre in Stratford. Cheltenham too proved interesting although there was no racing on, so we had to settle for some retail therapy. Thanks to Ian, our driver and to Ann McArdle and all the organisers.

Walking Festival
The Walking Festival was a great success. The weather gods looked kindly down on us and participants came from far and near to enjoy two glorious days of varied walking experiences. Thanks to all who helped organise the Festival, to our sponsors, Permanent TSB, AIB and Monaghan Credit Union; to all who donated spot prizes, Ronaghan's pharmacy, Dinkins, Savoire Faire at Graham's, Dolan's pharmacy, Sloane's, Ann McArdle of A to B Coaches, Health 1st Pharmacy, Matthews Newsagent and Flemings supermarket. Thanks also to Dearbhla Kelly for the posters and brochure, to Rev. Betty Thompson and Mrs Jean Wallace for allowing us to see St. Salvator's church, Glaslough, to Castle Leslie Estate for permission to walk on the Estate, to Coillte for facilitating the Rossmore walk, to Theresa Loftus and Monaghan Museum, to the Coonian Ramblers, the Knockatallon Ramblers, the Northern Ireland Forestry Service, the Garda Siochana and to Monaghan Sports' Partnership. A special thank you to our Speaker, Jason Black who gave us a fascinating talk on his successful climb of the North face of Mount Everest and of the personal struggles that drove him. We wish him well in his next endeavour, climbing K2.

Due to high demand it has been decided that the digital photography class should be split in two. The split is to be made at our first class next Wednesday October 29th. The idea is that those with elementary cameras will take their place in the first series of classes while those with more sophisticated equipment can attend the second series starting in January. Please bring your camera with you to the YWCA next Wednesday at 3pm SHARP. This first session is for ALL participants and is relevant irrespective of what sort of camera you use. Fee to cover rent of hall, refreshments etc. is as usual €3 per class. Hope to see you all on Wednesday.

Barbecue.

The barbecue will take place on Wednesday 25th June at 5.30 at the Wetlands centre, Ballybay. Cost for the bbq is 10euro, if you are interested in bussing it from Monaghan there will be an extra charge. Please leave your name, contact number and 10 euro in an envelope in the U3A box in the Age Action shop in Glaslough st. before Friday June 13th. Please indicate if you are interested in taking a bus. Tea/coffee will be served but as there is no bar in the Wetlands, you are advised to bring your own drinks and opener. Good food, music and craic guaranteed.

So what is the U3A?

It's a loose interest group for retired people aged 55+. It is a wonderful educational, co-operative movement into which retired people can dip and choose what interests them. The University of the Third Age, to give it its full title, encourages an interest in lifelong learning and no, you don't need a degree to be a member, nor will you get one, but you will have fun taking part in our activities, talks and trips. Activities cover a wide range of interests such as indoor bowls, learning French, flower arranging, gardening, card playing, computer tutorials, orienteering, walking, yoga and book club. Walks are organised for a different venue each week and are conducted at a pleasant pace, allowing social interaction. Activities are led by volunteers, so there is little cost involved except when an outsider is invited in to give classes such as Pilates. Activities arise as members request them and depending on the skill set of volunteers. We are an affiliated organisation with the national charity Age Action and the shop in Glaslough street hosts our commnications post box.
U3A began in France, spread to Britain and Northern Ireland and here in Monaghan we have one of the largest groups in the Republic with over 160 members and growing. Members come from all walks of life and backgrounds. Each month we have a Speaker on topics relevant to U3A members such as Finance, Health, Holidays, Bird Watching etc. Trips are also organised for members, so in recent times we have visited Farmleigh/Kilmainham Gaol, Leinster House, Lough Derg, Titanic Quarter, Belfast and Mount Stewart, House and Gardens. Thus through our activities, the U3A provides the opportunity for people in the Third Age to continue to be mentally, physically and socially active for the betterment of themselves and society. Members can take part in as many or as few activities as they like depending on their interests and physical ability. For an annual fee of 15 euro for an individual or 20 euro for a couple, there is great value to be had and much to enjoy, even if it's only to join in the Coffee Morning in Graham's on a Thursday.

To find out more about us look to our website, the Northern Standard, local church and community bulletins and newsletters.

Annual Registration meeting
About 50 members attended the annual registration meeting of Monaghan U3A held in the YWCA Hall, North Road Monaghan on Thursday last January 17th. The U3A is a worldwide organisation for lifelong learning. Its object is to encourage older people to pass on to each other their skills and knowledge and to get involved in shared activities.
The meeting heard a report of last year's events and the treasurer outlined the group's financial position. After the election of officers a discussion took place regarding proposed outings and activities for 2013 and in addition to the group's current programme a number of new pursuits were suggested including the formation of a U3A choir.
The meeting was then addressed by Margaret Fitzpatrick education officer with Age Action and National coordinator for U3A. She commended the Monaghan branch for their progress in the last number of years and indicated that the U3A movement was growing rapidly in Ireland with further branches being formed in various counties. The organisation is particularly active in Northern Ireland and the Monaghan branch has already established relationships with many of their members. Margaret, through Age Action Ireland, will explore the possibility of having an all island conference held in Monaghan in the autumn of 2013 in conjunction with the Gathering"
Anyone wishing to join U3A who could not attend the meeting can do so by filling out a registration form at the Age Action shop in Glaslough St. Monaghan. Annual membership costs €15 per person or €20 per couple.

U3A NEWS W/C Jan 7th

The 2013 programme will kick off with a registration meeting in the YWCA Hall, North Road Monaghan on Thursday next January 17th at 11am when new members will be especially welcome. The meeting will be addressed by Margaret Fitzpatrick, Education Development Officer of Age Action. Margaret is the National Co-ordinator of U3A groups and will bring us up to date with the programmes of other groups in Ireland. Our on-going activities will be outlined and there will be an open discussion to plan new events.
After the Christmas break many of the regular activities have already re-commenced, including bowling on Monday nights in Sliabh Beagh, card playing on Wednesday nights in Ballinode and the rambling group has taken to walking with renewed vigour every Wednesday morning to work off the Christmas excesses.
We also plan to continue with our computer workshop in the library on Friday mornings at 11am starting on February 1st. The one to one tuition offered has proved to be a great hit with lots of older people getting their first taste of the World Wide Web and learning how to download pictures from their digital cameras. Gardening and digital photography classes are being planned provided there is enough interest so come along and tell us what you'd like to do. If you have a skill or interest you could share with others we'd love to hear from you.
Monthly meeting and lunch
On the last Friday of each month in place of our computer class we hope to have an information meeting in the YWCA building. It is planned to have a different speaker at each meeting to talk to the group on subjects of interest to those of a more mature vintage. The first of these events will be on Friday 25th January when we will be addressed by Philip McCabe from Citizens Information . The meeting at 11am will be followed by lunch at 12 noon at a cost of €5 per head. Philip is an expert on a wide range of topics and has been a regular guest imparting his knowledge on many radio shows. Come along and pick his brains!
